Post independence, IMC continued to play a pivotal role in Nation building in association with eminent personalities who shaped India’s destiny.

Such stalwarts, amongst others, often graced the Chamber by their presence and presentations of thought provoking addresses.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad

Mr. V. V. Giri

Dr. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed

Dr S. Radhakrishnan

Mr Giani Zail Singh

Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma

After that historic day, the chamber began looking forward to progress in the industrial sphere. Its new role required its involvement with placing before the national or the state government the problems of industry and commerce based on national and practical considerations.

IMC got involved in central planning and lot of other economic activities, which needed IMC to play a strategic role. IMC played a major role in addressing major issue concerned with the industry. Through the likes of Dr. R.C. Cooper, Mr. JRD Tata it continued to insist on the government to change their attitude towards the private sector. At the 61st AGM, President Shri Pratap Bhogilal suggested the need for liberalisation.

In 1968 chamber opposed the move to nationalise the banks. During the seventies IMC opposed the continual threat to the private sector despite the poor showing of the public sector. IMC had also set up a vigilance committee to fix the price of sensitive mass consumption goods from week to week.

At a meeting of the chamber held on January 13,1981, addressed by Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi, Mr. Guzder the then president of IMC made the point that the business world was one with the government in seeking the welfare of the people, but a 3 percent growth rate per annum cannot sustain the requirements of the masses. The constant erosion of the rupee had pushed up prices if basic and capital goods far higher than that of consumer goods. Interest rates had risen to astronomical heights. A hard look at both the mechanisms and extent of control was overdue. The government had complete monopoly over almost all the enterprises. Guzder suggested that the ownership and management of the government enterprises need to be separated.

The early 80's saw the economy righting itself . Mrs. Sharayu Dafatary the then Chambers' president owed it to the change in the government . She said on Feb 26 1982 that " Following the change of government, there had been visible signs of improvement in the economy".

Thus as the chamber entered its platinum jubilee year under the presidentship of Mr. Kantikumar Potdar, it was comforted by the fact that there was an upturn in the nation's economy in the Jubilee period. But however due to the global recession and red tapism in clearing the projects the economy suffered a lot.

During the tenure of Shri Pranlal Bhogilal in 1985 the Chamber built three new meeting halls in its building, viz the IMC Walchand Centre of business training, the R.D. Birla board room and the Kilachand Conference room. In recognition of IMC's contribution the government of Maharashtra named the "E" road in front of the chamber as Indian Merchants' Chamber Marg".

Later in 1991, under Mr. Mahendra singh's tenure as president, the H.T. Parekh Conference Room and Kilachand Computer Center were established. In 1985-86 under the President Pratap Bhogilal IMC resigned its FICCI membership, but withdrew it later after amicable solution. In 1986- 87, under President J P Thacker, an epoch-making event was the opening of the IMC's Court of Arbitration at the hands of Hon'ble justice P.N. Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of the Supreme court. This was intended to serve as an alternative forum for resolving commercial disputes speedily and economically.

Also "Bombay City Corner" was inaugurated by the Governor of Maharashtra Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma. During the early 90's the new era of globalisation under the leadership of Mr. P.V. Narsimharao started. The Chamber organised numerous meetings, seminars and workshops to prepare the business community for the changing environment. It submitted the government a blueprint for various sequential measures to be taken to accelerate the economic growth in the liberalised environment. IMC has thereafter began to work in close cooperation with BCCI, MCCI, CII.

This cooperation among the various chambers became a powerful tool at the hands of the business community in the days to come and help forced the government to mend the wrong policies. The Indian Merchants' chamber has no ideological blinkers, and acts in enlightened self interest - the larger interest of the people. It is free to adapt to times. Promoting India's well being is IMC's mission.

It has been true to this mission for most part of the 20th century. As the 21st century approaches, it is confident of continuing in this noble.
