The Indian Merchants’ Chamber was established in 1907 under the inspiration of the great nationalist upsurge of those days which kindled in the business community patriotic fervour to promote Swadeshi and liberate Indian industry, trade and commerce from the fetters of foreign domination. Its contribution to the national struggle for freedom has been acknowledged by the great leaders of the country.
After Independence, when the country embarked upon the mighty adventure of regenerating the economy with a view to eradicating poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and disease, the Chamber played a vital role in extending its all out support to the Government in accomplishing this task. Besides performing its normal functions as the spokesman of trade, commerce and industry, it has been endeavouring to make its constructive contribution to planned development of the economy and achievement of a synthesis of sectoral and national interests.
In a developing economy such as ours, organised and sustained efforts have to be made both by the Government and commercial community to see that the economy attains a high degree of momentum. It is from this point of view that the Indian Merchants’ Chamber has instituted a Scheme of Awards in 1969 as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
The Purpose of the Awards is to recognise and reward talent in India in different spheres such as:- Technology
- Research
- Increased Production in Agriculture and Industry
- Scientific management
- Industrial relations
- Export performance
- Rural development etc.
The funds for the Awards have been donated by various trade and industry organisations as well as members of the public. The IMC Diamond Jubilee Endowment Trust which is Managing the Awards is registered under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950.
